I have done Buenos Aires in three days and felt like I sprinted past it, and in five and finally exhaled. But seven is the trip I now recommend above all — the one length where you get every headline sight, two proper day trips, and the slow local afternoons that are the whole point of this city.

This 7 days in buenos aires itinerary gives you the city’s greatest hits across four days — the historic centre, Recoleta, Palermo, La Boca and a tango night — then two full day trips to Tigre and Colonia, and a final day for markets, cafes and a farewell parrilla. A week is the sweet spot because it lets you pair the capital with one or two escapes without ever feeling rushed. Treat every peso figure below as a rough 2026 guide the rate will have moved by the time you land.

How to use this 7-day plan

Each day groups one or two adjacent barrios so you are never zig-zagging, with the two day trips placed midweek. Mornings are for sights, late afternoons for a cafe, evenings for dinner around 9pm the way porteños eat — none of it rigid. For the bigger picture, lean on our complete Buenos Aires itinerary hub, which this week-long plan expands on; if your trip runs shorter, our 5 days in Buenos Aires plan or the classic 3 days in Buenos Aires route trim it to the essentials.

Day 1: San Telmo & the historic centre

Start where the city began. Plaza de Mayo is ringed by the pink Casa Rosada, the colonial Cabildo and the Metropolitan Cathedral — the church where the future Pope Francis once said mass. Walk west up Avenida de Mayo, pausing at the Dante-inspired Palacio Barolo, to the towering Obelisco on Avenida 9 de Julio. Break for a cortado and medialunas at Café Tortoni under its 1858 stained glass; if the queue is long, lovely La Poesía in San Telmo is my pick.

Afternoon: down Defensa into San Telmo

Walk south on cobbled Calle Defensa into San Telmo, the oldest barrio — antique shops, faded grandeur, and the daily indoor Mercado de San Telmo for a choripán or milanesa sandwich. If your week includes a Sunday, save San Telmo for it: the whole street becomes a heaving feria of antiques, crafts and street tango (our San Telmo neighbourhood guide walks it block by block). Stay local for your first dinner — the parrillas and wine bars here are excellent — and save the museums; tomorrow goes uptown.
